Charging at work: a practical guide for facility and fleet managers

Five decisions that decide whether a workplace charging project runs smoothly or becomes a daily headache.

Workplace charging looks simple until forty people want to charge at once. These five decisions shape how well it works.

1. Who can charge?

Decide whether chargers are for staff, visitors, fleet vehicles or all three. Access control and tariffs follow from this answer.

2. How will you pay for the energy?

Options include free charging as a perk, a charge at cost, or a charge with a margin. A charge point management system records each session so any of these is possible.

3. How much power can you really use?

Your building has a fixed connection. Dynamic load management shares it between chargers and everything else, so you can install more bays than the connection could support at full power.

4. Where do the bays go?

Short cable runs save money. Put bays close to the distribution board, and keep accessible bays near entrances.

5. Who looks after it?

Chargers need monitoring and occasional service. Agree who responds when a charger shows a fault, and how quickly.
